George Birkel

Graveside services for George J. Birkel, 94, of East Moline, IL, will be 11:30 am Friday, at the Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island, where military rites will be conducted by the American Legion #26. Anyone interested in attending the service should meet at 10:45 am on Friday at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf, IA.

George passed away on Friday, February 3, 2023, at Park Vista, East Moline, IL.

George was born on February 12, 1928, in Rock Island, IL, the son of Lloyd and Vendla (Bengston) Birkel. He married LaNeva Marlier on July 17, 1954, in Moline, IL. George worked as a tool designer at John Deere Plow & Planter Works, Moline, IL for 35 years. He retired on November 1, 1982.

He won several events at the Senior Olympics including many marathons. He enjoyed going to the YMCA, playing volleyball and dancing to country music. He served in the U.S. Army from August 27, 1946, to January 30, 1948.

Survivors include his wife of E. Moline, daughters, Darcy Loete and Lisa Birkel, both of Moline, IL, son, Todd (Lynda) Birkel of Elizabeth, IL, three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Ethel Ruge, Doris Birkel, Barbara Gibbs, brothers, Donald, Richard, Lloyd and John.
