George W. Wheat, 70, of Bettendorf, Iowa, died Sunday, August 24, 2008 at St. Anthony’s Continuing Care Center, Rock Island, Illinois.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, August 29, 2008 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Bettendorf, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Thursday at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 6:00 P.M. at the funeral home Thursday evening. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
George was born May 11, 1938 in Hope, North Dakota, the son of William G. & Marjorie E. (Wright) Wheat. He was united in marriage to Marge P. Hoffman on August 8, 1959 in Waterloo, Iowa. George entered the United States Air Force in July of 1957 and was honorably discharged in July of 1961.
He was employed as a truck driver for Standard Forwarding of East Moline, Illinois and retired in 1999 after over 30 years of service. George enjoyed working outdoors on his tractor and assisting in tree removal. He would always be willing to help out a neighbor in need.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife of 49 years, Marge; his daughters, Pauline (Pete) Stauffer, of Moline, Illinois, Doneta (Michael) Reeser, of Washington, Illinois, and Jackie (Patrick) Elder of Bettendorf; his sons, Marty (DeAnne) Wheat, of Davenport, Bill (Monique) Wheat, of Davenport, and Christopher (Tondi) Wheat, of Columbus, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 4 sisters; and 5 brothers.
George was preceded in death by his parents.
