Georgia M. Schmidt, 78, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, April 9 at Trinity Bettendorf of a sudden heart attack.

Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel in Bettendorf. She will be laid to rest at McCausland Cemetery, McCausland, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 8 P.M. on Tuesday at the funeral home where an Order of the Eastern Star service will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Memorial may be made to the family.

She was born January 18, 1933 in Princeton, Iowa, the daughter of Charles & Mildred (Cousins) Carter. On October 1, 1955, she was united in marriage to Grant M. Schmidt in Princeton. He preceded her in death on May 23, 1988.

Georgia was employed for many years from the Bettendorf School System and after retirement, worked for 12 years the Red Apple Day Care Center in Bettendorf as a cook & surrogate grandma to hundreds of children at the center.

Georgia was a very loving mother and friend who would do virtually anything to help others. She was a joy to everyone she met and considered all of her friends as her best friends. She loved jazz music and devoted 38 years as a volunteer for the Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Society. Georgia was also a member of the Catfish Jazz Society, the Red Hat Society and the Silver Creek Chapter #302 of the Order of the Eastern Star of LeClaire, Iowa In earlier years; she was a member of the Bettendorf Order of the Eastern Star where she & Grant served together as Worthy Matron and Patron. She was also a faithful volunteer at the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center.

Those left to honor her memory include her children, Gayle (Rusty) Suiter of LeClaire, Mary Gaye (Kenneth) Morse of Davenport, Iowa and Gregory Schmidt of Bettendorf; her step-daughter, Marcia (Denny) Walthers of McPherson, Kansas; her grandchildren, Daniel (Sandy) Schmidt, Nicole (Kerry) Lambrecht, Zachary Morse, Jacob Morse, Dorothy (Brian) Gulick, Christine Suiter, Jacob Schmidt, Alexa Schmidt, Nikolas Schmidt, Angela (Chris) Shafer and Stephanie Smith; her great-grandchildren, Bailey Jo Holdorf, Riley Jo Holdorf, Lucas Cook, Logan Lambrecht, Lauren Lambrecht, Corey Suiter, Christopher Lerch, Elizabeth Lerch, Adam Steininger, Hope Steininger, Jessica DeWulf, Colin Gulick, Chloe Jones and Caleb Smith; her brothers, Lawrence (Beatrice) Carter and Robert Carter, all of Princeton; her sister, Jane (Joe) Buffo of Knoxville, Iowa; her sister-in-law, Joyce (Victor) Camp of Elvira, Iowa and Marti Schmidt of Prescott, Arizona; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces & great-nephews.

In addition to her husband, Georgia was preceded in death by her son, Gary Schmidt on November 27, 1986, her parents, and her beloved German Shepherd, “Dutchess”.

Georgia was a wonderful & beloved mother & grandma and will be sadly missed. However, her spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew & loved her
