Gerald “Gerry” Michuda, 79, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at Manor Care Utica Ridge, Davenport, Iowa.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 A.M. on Monday, April 18, 2011 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Bettendorf, Iowa. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island, Illinois. Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church or the American Cancer Society. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf, Iowa is assisting the family with arrangements.

Gerry was born in Chicago, Illinois to August and Hermina (Buday) Michuda. He graduated from De Paul University in Chicago. Afterwards he was drafted into the Army, serving in Korea. Upon discharge from the Army he worked for Armour Labs for one year as a lab technician and for Sherwin-Williams Paint Company-Chemical Division for twenty-five years as a process supervisor. He retired from an engineering group at Headquarters, U.S. Army AMCCOM in Rock Island, Illinois after fourteen and one half years of service on December 31, 1997. He was married to Odilia (Dee) Zawisza in Posen, Illinois. She preceded him in death on March 11, 2011.

Gerry was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Lourdes Evergreen Senior group, Plus 60, CASI, NARFE, RSVP and AARP. His greatest satisfaction in retirement was driving people to medical appointments for the American Cancer Society and CASI, delivering meals to the elderly though the Scott County Meals on Wheels Program and donating blood to the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center. He enjoyed learning and participating in Bible Study classes at Lourdes, Communiversity at St. Ambrose University and Plus 60 Lunch and Learn Seminars. His pleasurable interests included travel, golf, gardening, tennis when younger, attending theatrical productions and band concerts, reading (especially about World War II and the Korean Conflict), listening to political talk shows, watching the Chicago Bears and doing crossword puzzles.

He is survived by his loving son, Michael Michuda, Iowa City, Iowa; his sister, Virginia Harar, Arlington, Virginia; his brothers, Edward Michuda, Park Ridge, Illinois, Al Michuda, Orland Park, Illinois, Gus (Mary) Michuda, Prospect Heights, Illinois and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to his wife, Dee he was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Andrew Michuda and Tom Michuda, a Christian Brother known as Brother Lawrence Martin, his sisters-in-law, Mona Michuda, Polly Michuda and Eva Michuda, his brother-in-law, John Harar and a niece, Peggy Michuda.

The family wishes to thank Dr. George Kovach and Dr. Thomas Stoffel and their staffs for their warmth and compassion during his illness.
