Gerald was born in McIntosh, Minnesota on January 22, 1940, the son of William J. and H. Cecelia (Diercks) Polley. He was baptized on February 10, 1940 and confirmed in the Lutheran faith on Palm Sunday (April 11), 1954 in McIntosh. He graduated from McIntosh High School in 1958 and received his bachelor’s degree in mathematics education from Moorhead State University in Moorhead, Minnesota. He would later go on to earn a master of arts in mathematics from the University of South Dakota. On December 28, 1963, he was united in marriage to Susan M. Holte in McIntosh. She preceded him in death on May 14, 2023.
After graduating from college, he and Susan made their first home on Prairie Lake outside of Pelican Rapids, Minnesota where they were both teachers. Their son William was born while they lived at the lake home. Shortly before their second son, Bruce, was born, they moved into town where they lived for many years. Gerald taught mathematics at the high school from 1963 to 1997 and served as the school district’s first computer coordinator for a period of time in the 1970s and 1980s. Gerald enjoyed gardening as well as collecting antiques. He would often bring home an antique clock or radio from an auction and restore it to working order. After retirement, Gerald and Susan moved to Worthington, Minnesota in 2002.
Gerald’s Christian faith was central to his life. He put his trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation and passed this faith on to his children. He found joy in serving the Lord in church and sharing God’s Word with others.
Gerald was preceded in death by his wife, Susan; five brothers, Rev. Laverne Polley, Lyle Polley, Howard Polley, Rev. Victor Polley, and Merrill Polley; and three sisters, Ruth Mueller, Marlene Habedank, and one in infancy. He is survived by his sons, William (Naomi) Polley of Davenport, Bruce (Megan) Polley of Maize, Kansas; and four grandchildren.
