Gerald F. Schmidt

Gerald F. “Jerry” Schmidt, 84, of Bettendorf, died Monday, June 7, 2010 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, June 11, 2010 at Bettendorf Presbyterian Church in Bettendorf, where he was a member. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.
Jerry was born December 2, 1925 in Davenport, the son of George F. & Josephine (Hansen) Schmidt. During World War II, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served as a Fireman 1st Class. He was honorably discharged in July of 1946.
He was united in marriage to Beverly J. Donis on September 18, 1954 in Moline, Illinois. She preceded him in death on October 3, 2008.
Jerry & Beverly owned and operated the former S & L (Jack & Jill) Grocery in Bettendorf for forty-two years. He also enjoyed gardening and had an extensive vegetable garden where he would grow practically anything that was edible. He also spent his time hunting and fishing. Jerry and Beverly had enjoyed playing cards for many years with friends at the Viking Club. In addition to Bettendorf Presbyterian Church, he was a member of Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughters, Pamela Jean Bloomberg of Bettendorf, Karen (Kurt) Rauch of Bettendorf, Jeri-Jo (Wayne) Dowty of Ohio, Doreen Kay Schmidt of Ames, Iowa and Georgia Staub of Bettendorf; his grandchildren, Justin, Cathy, Stephen, Erin, Monica, Karie, Laura, Nick, Tyler, Brandon, Nate, Megan & Brenna; and his sisters, Roberta Ralfs of Bettendorf, Marilyn (Jack) Lemon of Michigan and Mary June (Don) Brown of Bettendorf.
In addition to his wife, Beverly, Jerry was preceded in death by his parents.
