Gerald L. Gaghagen, 77, a resident of Davenport, Iowa died on Wednesday, May 24, 2006 at Forest Hill Health & Rehabilitation Center, East Moline, Illinois.
Services will be held at 4:00 P.M. Sunday, May 28, 2006 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf, Iowa. Interment will be private. Visitation will be from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family. Following the service, all are invited to join the family for fellowship & food at 1st Presbyterian Church in Davenport.
He was born March 22, 1929 in Davenport, the son of Sam & Hilda (Beintema) Gaghagen. On April 19, 1946, he was united in marriage to Nancy Hillock in Davenport.
Gerald was employed in tire sales for Goodyear and was store manager of the River City Tire Company of Davenport. He was also employed as a driver for River Bend Transit Company of Davenport and in earlier years, had been a sales associate for Prudential Insurance Company.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving as a electrician’s mate and fireman’s apprentice aboard the USS Spokane in the Mediterranean.
For over 60 years, he was an enthusiastic fan of the Chicago and had twice been featured in the Quad-City Times for his Cub loyalty. He was an avid golfer and bowler and one carried a 202 bowling average. When his health began to decline, he took up bingo with a passion. He spent many enjoyable times at C.A.S.I. in Davenport, loved to travel with his wife and had visited every state except Alaska.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife of 59 years, Nancy; his daughters, Carol (Tony) McGinnis of Rock Island, Illinois and Vicki Ybarra of Davenport; his sons, Kim (Donna) Gaghagen of Chico, California, Rick (Rose) Gaghagen and John Gaghagen, all of Davenport; his grandchildren, Mike (Amy) Gaghagen of Moline, Illinois, Kimi (Jason) Hambright of North Liberty, Iowa, Ashley Gaghagen of San Francisco, California, Jake McGinnis of Rock Island, Ryan Foster of Bettendorf, Jesse Vicary of McCausland, Iowa, Sam Gaghagen in Georgia and Lakyn Gaghagen of Davenport; five great-grandchildren; his sister, Eloise Martzahn of Bettendorf; and his sisters-in-law, Lois Gaghagen of Bettendorf and Grace Fulscher of Rock Island.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Don; an infant son, Dan; several aunts & uncles; and one great-grandson.
