Harold G. Schurr, 91, a life-long Scott County farmer and a resident of Davenport, Iowa died on Thursday, July 3, 2008 at Trinity Pathway Hospice in Bettendorf, Iowa.
His funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, July 7, 2008 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 3:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family for a donation to be made to the 4-H Club or the Scott County Fair in Harold’s memory.
He was born in Scott County, Iowa on April 22, 1917, the son of George & Minnie (Eckermann) Schurr. On March 25, 1942, he was united in marriage to Grace C. Moeller in Davenport, Iowa. She preceded him in death on June 5, 1961. On December 5, 1975, he was united in marriage to Rovene M. (Dyer) Lowe in Bettendorf, Iowa.
Harold owned & operated the family farm in LeClaire Township where he actively farmed until his retirement in 1980. The Schurr Farm was honored by being designated a Century Farm, having remained in the same family for over one hundred years.
In addition to work on the farm, Harold was also a sales representative for the former PAG Seed Corn Company for many years. He was former member of Scott County 4-H, the Scott County Farm Bureau and the Davenport Moose Lodge #28.
Even though farming was his “favorite” activity, Harold also took great pleasure in gardening, enjoyed going to the Scott County Fair & liked to attend farm auctions. He also had a special interest in antique tractors. Harold loved to dance on Wednesday and Saturday nights at Fairyland or the Col Ballroom and spent many enjoyable evenings playing cards with his many friends.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Rovene; his daughter, Karen (Steve) Peterson of Hudson, Wisconsin; his sons, Harlen (Linda) Schurr of Davenport and Gary (Lynn) Schurr of Grand Mound, Iowa; his step-daughter, Gladys Treadway of Bettendorf; his step-son, Charles Lowe of Rock Island, Illinois; fourteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; his sister, Marian Hamann of Eldridge, Iowa; and many other relatives and wonderful friends.
In addition to his first wife, his sons, Richard and Vernon; and his sisters, Helen Holst and Mildred Lemke, preceded him in death.
