Harry M. Simons, 87, a resident of Davenport, Iowa and formerly of Joliet, Illinois died on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus in Davenport.

Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Monday, June 2, 2014 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home of Bettendorf where a Masonic Service will be conducted at 7:00 P.M.  Interment services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 in the chapel of Woodlawn Cemetery, 23060 W. Jefferson St in Joliet, Illinois.  Memorials may be made to the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children.

He was born in Houston, Texas on March 21, 1927, the son of Fred and Margaret (Breckling) Simons.  During World War II, Harry served in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged as a Seaman First Class in 1946.

On June 24, 1961, he was united in marriage to Joyce Joan Baxter in Aurora, Illinois.  June died on September 4, 2013.

Harry was a Project Officer at the Rock Island Arsenal and in earlier years, at the Joliet Arsenal.  He retired on June 28, 1985 after nearly 36 years of federal service.

His memberships included the Doric Masonic Lodge, the Davenport Consistory, Kaaba Shrine of Davenport where he served as Secretary/Treasurer, Assistant Public Relations Chairman and as Assistant Hospital Chairman, the Joliet Shrine Club where he served as Secretary, the Mohassan Grotto where he served Secretary/Treasurer of the Grotto Greeters, the York Rite and the Knight’s Templar where he was Past Master of both the Royal Arch Chapter and Thrice Master Council.  In addition, he was a member of the American Legion Post 26 of Davenport where he served on the Executive Board and was a long-time member of the Lindsay Park Yacht Club..

Those left to honor his memory include his sons, Stephen (Doreen) Simons of Davenport and Brian Simons of Davenport; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and his brother, Fred (Stormy) Simons of Pensacola, Florida.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Bobby Simons.
