Harry R. Hensley, 86, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa and formerly of Pleasant Valley, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, May 30, 2007 at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus in Davenport, Iowa.
His funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, June 2, 2007 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pleasant Valley. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Saturday at the church. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf is assisting the family with arrangements.
Harry was born December 17, 1920 to John & Pearl (Forney) Hensley in Jetmore, Kansas. He married Lillian Modlin on December 3, 1949 in Scribner, Nebraska.
Harry was a member of the Greatest Generation, serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was employed at Alcoa as a Hot Mill Operator for 35 years, retiring in February of 1986. He enjoyed gardening on his acreage in Pleasant Valley for 38 years and especially enjoyed growing tomatoes.
His memberships included Trinity Lutheran Church, the Quad-Cities Plus 60 Club, the Alcoa Local 105 Steelworkers Retirees, the Alcoa Retirees Club and the IOOF Pilot Lodge 38 of LeClaire, Iowa where he also served as treasurer.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian to whom he was married for almost 58 years. Other survivors include his daughter, Cecily & son-in-law, Mark Gronewold of Crown Point, Indiana, his daughter, Valerie Schwob of Bettendorf, his son, David & daughter-in-law, Marcia Hensley of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, his daughter, Melissa Clark of Boone, Iowa. Grandchildren include Jay Gerety & his wife, Nellie and great-grandson, Michael, all of Las Vegas, Nevada, Jackie Kennis of Boone, Kerry Hensley of Davenport and Kristine Hensley and John Thomas Hensley of Eau Claire. Surviving sisters include Gladys Collins of Carbondale, Kansas, Lois Smutny of Madison, Nebraska and Dorothy Novotny & her husband, Don of Oakland, Nebraska. Surviving brothers-in-law include Dr. Carol Swanbom of Grand Island, Nebraska and Ray Kucera of Cedar Bluffs, Nebraska. Harry is also survived by his sister-in-law, Ann Hensley of St. Louis, Missouri and many nieces & nephews.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Madison Hensley and John Morris Hensley Jr.; and his sisters, Floreine Swanbom, Florence Haining and Shirley Kucera.
The family would like to express it’s warmest appreciation to Dr. James Hahn, Dad’s physician at Genesis West; Heather, Amy and Gwen, Dad’s registered nurses at Genesis West; and the entire staff of the Medical-Surgical Unit of Genesis West for the fine care and sensitivity provided to Harry and his family during his illness. The family also expresses their sincere thanks to the Rev. Julie Higgs for her thoughtfulness, care and support during this time of grief.
