Harvey G. Phillips

Harvey G. Phillips, 83, a life-long resident of LeClaire, Iowa died Wednesday, November 19, 2003 at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus in Davenport, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, November 22, 2003 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery, LeClaire. Visitation will be from 3:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the LeClaire Volunteer Fire Department or the Buffalo Bill Museum of LeClaire.
He was born March 3, 1920 in LeClaire, the son of Glen & Clara (Martini) Phillips and was a graduate of LeClaire High School. On June 14, 1942, he was united in marriage to Mary Caroline Ballard in LeClaire.
Harvey was employed as maintenance foreman at Sivyer Steel Company in Bettendorf, retiring in 1983 after many years of faithful service.
He served on the LeClaire Volunteer Fire Department for 50 years, retiring in 1983 as Fire Chief, a post he held for 36 years. A tireless volunteer and always ready to help, he served on the LeClaire School Board, the Buffalo Bill Museum Board, the Elderly Housing Board and the LeClaire Civic Club. For the Sesquintennial Celebration, Harvey worked countless hours in restoring the LeClaire antique fire truck.
Harvey was an accomplished carpenter and took great pleasure in caring for his yard & flowers. His generosity and cheerful spirit were always a part of his life and although he will be sadly missed, he will be fondly remembered by all who knew & loved him.
His beloved family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the joy of his life.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife of 61 years, Mary; his daughter & son-in-law, Sandra & Gary Steinke of Bettendorf; his son & daughter-in-law, Donald & Linda Phillips of LeClaire; his grandchildren & their spouses, Kimberly & Jim LaMarre of Round Rock, Texas, Whitney & Don Willett of Havana, Illinois, Matthew & Carol Steinke of Hoffman Estates, Illinois and David & Jennifer Steinke of Ames, Iowa; his great-grandchildren, Abigail, Garrett & Tyler LaMarre and Peyton & Eli Willett; and his sisters & brother-in-law, Veva & Charles Cale of Bettendorf and Thelma Bowers of Pleasant Valley, Iowa.
Harvey was preceded in death by his parents; his twin-brother, Harley Phillips; and his sister, Flora Bright.
