Helen M. Funkhouser, 88, of Bettendorf, Iowa and formerly of Pleasant Valley, Iowa, died Monday, November 10, 2014 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 17, 2014 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pleasant Valley where she was a member.  Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf.  Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or to the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.

Helen was born March 12, 1926 on the family farm in Durant, Iowa, the daughter of John & Kathryn (Witt) Luppen.  She was a 1943 graduate of Davenport High School.  Helen was united in marriage to Wilbur W. Funkhouser on July 13, 1946 in Dubuque, Iowa.  He preceded her in death on October 4, 1969.

Helen had retired from John Deere in 1987 and then worked in the records department and administration with the Bettendorf Police Department.  Most recently, she had worked for Jim Sweeney & Associates in Davenport.

Helen enjoyed volunteering her time after retirement.  She was on various boards with her church and also sang in the choir.  She volunteered for the Pleasant View Elementary 1 st grade reading program and also with WVIK-FM at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, where she had also sang in the oratory choir.  She enjoyed golfing and bowling for many years as well.

Those left to honor her memory include her daughter, Deb Johnston of Long Grove, Iowa; her grandsons, Jeremiah (Kristi) Johnston of Kewanee, Illinois, Lucas Johnston of Erie, Illinois and Quinn Johnston of Los Angeles, California; and her great-grandsons, Eliot, Meyer and Graham.

In addition to her husband, Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Sue Albrecht; and her brother, John Luppen.
