Henry Alden “Bud” Hanson, 87, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, October, 3, 2009 at the Bettendorf Presbyterian Church, 1200 Middle Road, Bettendorf. Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Friday at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf with a Masonic service at 7. Burial will be at 2:15 P.M. Saturday in the Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery, Monmouth, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the Bettendorf Presbyterian Church in care of McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, 644 River Drive, Bettendorf, Iowa 52722.
Henry was born July 2, 1922 in Monmouth, Illinois the son of Henry and Faye (Fisher) Hanson. He grew up during the Depression as one of three brothers and three sisters. During these most difficult times he learned the value of hard work, sacrifice and self-reliance. He graduated from Monmouth High School. He married his wife of 68 years, Eula Jean Newberry on September 20, 1941.
During WWII he served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Nemasket AOG 10 as and electrician mate 2nd Class. He participated in the invasion of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, the liberation of Leyte as well as the occupation of China. He was awarded 6 medals and two bronze stars.
He worked for eleven years as a journeyman potter for Western Stoneware and was a state certified welder for the Illinois Power Company for eight years in Monmouth. He retired in 1985 after twenty-six years as an industrial truck mechanic at Alcoa in Riverdale, Iowa.
Henry was a member of the Bettendorf Presbyterian Church, the Hamilton Lodge #664 AF and AM, Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, S.J. USA, Davenport where he was a 32° Mason, Mohassan Grotto, the Alcoa Twenty-Five year club, the Alcoa Retirement Club, Aluminum Workers International Union AFL-CIO Local 105-International, the Woodcarvers Congress, the National Woodcarvers Association, the Plus Sixty Club, Life Member of JW Clendenin Post 2301 VFW and the Warren County Illinois Genealogical Society in Monmouth.
He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, rebuilding and refinishing antiques, painting, wood carving, gardening and canning vegetables.
Along with his wife, Eula he is survived by his son, Rev. Robert L. (Mary) Hanson, Springfield, Illinois; his daughter, Carolyn (Raymond) Hanson Bell, Holton, Kansas; his sister, Jeanne (Chuck) Orwig, Kewanne, Illinois; his brother, Richard L. (Mary) Hanson, Riverdale, Iowa, his granddaughters, Shandi (Jeff) Hilliard, Holton, Kansas, Heather (Aaron) Burris, Topeka, Kansas, Rev. Stephanie (Craig) Boaz, Gahanna, Ohio, Lucy (Rodney) Schrage, Breese, Illinois and Anne Hanson, Antioch, Tennessee; his great-grandchildren, Toby J., Lauren and Shaye Leavendusky, Glenna and Emily Burris and Maggie and Zane Schrage.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Jenny Caldwell and Louise Law, his brother, Art Hanson and his daughter, Glenna Faye.
