Herbert G. Kelling, 87, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at Trinity Bettendorf.

Visitation will be from 12:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, February 24, 2013 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home of Bettendorf.  Memorials may be made to Honor Flight of the Quad-Cities.

He was born on May 30, 1925 in Sioux City, Iowa, one of eight children born to Edward & Carrie (Wagner) Kelling.  His siblings were Lillian, Ada, Mary, Lloyd, Ed, Robert & Harold.  In 1958, he was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Smith in Davenport, Iowa.  She preceded him in death on March 18, 2009.

During World War II, Herb served in the U.S. Navy aboard a destroyer in the south Pacific.  He was present during the invasion of Iwo Jima and witnessed the famous flag raising following the American victory on the island.

Herb retired as a machinist in 1986 from the Alcoa Company after 37 years of faithful service.

He thoroughly loved his well-earned 27 years of retirement, leading a simple life and enjoying baseball, then football and finally, NASCAR.  His families, especially his beloved granddaughters were the joy of his life and much of his time revolved around them and their activities.

Among survivors are his son & daughter-in-law, Mark & Amy Kelling of LeClaire; and his granddaughters, Sydney Kelling of Dubuque, Iowa and Haley Kelling of LeClaire.
