Herbert L. Hartwich, 72, of Davenport, died Friday, August 7, 2009 at Select Specialty Hospital in Davenport.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, August 14, 2009 at Bettendorf Christian Church. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Thursday at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family.
Herb was born November 28, 1936 in Wabasso, Minnesota, the son of Lawrence H. & Clara A. (Muetzel) Hartwich. At the age of 9, he and his family moved to Illinois. He served in the United States Army Medical Corps and was honorably discharged in 1961. He was united in marriage to Betty J. Matesic on April 15, 2003 in Bettendorf. Herb was previously married to Norma Kunert-Gordon.
Herb had been employed for over 40 years with Kone Elevator and Escalator in Moline. Upon his retirement he started his own shop, called Madison Printing, where he did custom engraving. Herb frequently announced and sang with his son’s polka group, Karl and the Country Dutchmen and was responsible for getting them from show to show in earlier years. Herb also had obtained his pilot’s license many years ago and was proud of the 1954 Buick Super he had owned at one time.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Betty; his daughters Holly Kaminski of LaCrosse, Wisconsin and Joyce Cielecki of Galesville, Wisconsin; his son Karl (Linda) Hartwich of Trempealeau, Wisconsin; his step-children Anna Marie (Lacy) Freeman of Bettendorf and Robert (Pat) Matesic of Davenport; 2 grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; his sisters Marilyn (Arland) Seabloom of Orion, Illinois and Cheryl (Bob) Thompson of Orion; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved cat, Ben.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Ardell.
