Herbert W. Steiger Jr., 74, a resident of Panorama Park, Iowa died on Wednesday, January 11, 2006 at the Iowa Masonic Health Facility in Bettendorf, Iowa.
His funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, January 17, 2006 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf. Burial with military honors will be conducted at the Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a favorite charity, the Alzheimer’s Foundation, the Iowa Masonic Health Facility or to the family.
He was born February 24, 1931 in Davenport, Iowa, the son of Herbert W. & Beatrice (Healey) Steiger Sr. On April 21, 1953, he was united in marriage to Ellen Kathe Kuhn in Ladenburg, Germany.
Herb was employed as a millwright at the Oscar Mayer & Company in Davenport, Iowa, retiring in 1989 after nearly 37 years of service.
During the Korean Conflict, he served in the U. S. Army and was honorably discharged as a Corporal in 1953.
His memberships included Hamilton Lodge #664 of Bettendorf, Davenport Consistory and Kaaba Shrine. In addition, he was a member & past-president of the Buffalo Bill Shrine Club, a Life-Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9128 of Bettendorf and the United Food & Commercial Workers Union, Local 431 of Davenport.
Herb was active for 13 years in the Pleasant Valley Little League Baseball Program and loved to go fishing & hunting.
Those left to honor his memory include his beloved wife, Ellen; his daughters, Kathe Champagne of Lillian, Alabama and Sandra Conway of Bettendorf; his sons, Nils (Gretchen) Steiger of Hillsdale, Illinois and Dale (Trish) Steiger of Davenport; his grandchildren, Eric (Joice) Steiger, Ahren (Mary) Steiger, Bob (Jolene) Moeller, Kevin (Katie) Moeller, Jill Steiger, Andrew Steiger, Lindy Steiger, Ross Steiger, Kep Steiger, Allen Steiger, Lisa Steiger, Sarah Champagne, Kenny Champagne, Cary Champagne, Ben Champagne and Christopher Steiger; five great-grandchildren; his step-sisters, Tootie (Jack) Spratt of Riverdale, Iowa and Katherine Turner of Belvedere, South Carolina; his step-brothers, Bill Cosgard and Jack Cosgard, both of Davenport; his sister-in-laws, Patricia Steiger of Bettendorf and Maria Neeley & her special friend, Al of Rhodes, Iowa; and several nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, James Steiger; his son-in-law, Tim Champaign; his parents; his step-mother, Clara Cosgard; and his step-father, Ross Wehling.
