Herman H. Dittmer, Jr. 90, a resident of LeClaire, died Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf from complications of a recent stroke.
Funeral services celebrating his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 21, 2014 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Burial will be at the Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation will be 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. on Friday. Memorials may be made to the family for a memorial to be established.
Born on June 9, 1923 in LeClaire, Herman was the son of Herman H., Sr. and Rosa (Mohlmann) Dittmer. He married Darlene Gruenwald in LeClaire on May 23, 1948. She preceded him in death in 1998.
Herman was drafted into the United States Army where he served from 1943 - 1946. He was a member of the 10th Mountain Division during World War II and served in Italy, earning a bronze star.
Herman spent most of his working life as a machinist at the Rock Island Arsenal, retiring after 34 years of employment. During his retirement, Herman enjoyed traveling with Darlene, muskie fishing “up north,” woodworking and fixing lawnmowers.
Those left to honor his memory include his children: Vicki (Gene) Jebsen of LeClaire and Jon (Bonny) Dittmer of Davenport; grandchildren: Darcy (Ric) Bohling, Julie (Jerry) Spurgeon, Joe Dittmer, Jayson (Vanessa) Jebsen and Susan Dittmer; great-grandchildren: Jonathan and Abigail Bohling, Aidan and Adelynn Spurgeon, Emeline and Anelie Jebsen and Tia McBee.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and siblings.
