Hubert H. “Hugh” Millick died Sunday evening, the 3rd of April 2005 at Iowa Masonic Health Facility, Bettendorf after an extended illness. He was 85.
A life-long Bettendorf, Iowa resident, Mr. Millick was born in his parent’s home on Central Avenue on Friday the 15th of August 1919. He grew up fishing with his dad, fussing with his mother and sister, playing baseball, romping with the family’s cocker spaniels, duck calling, and working on his uncle’s farm in rural Pleasant Valley, Iowa. As Bettendorf did not yet have a high school, he attended what was then known as Davenport High School (now Central), Davenport, Iowa, graduating in 1939. While in high school, he discovered another of his life-long loves, golf, and caddied in his spare time at Davenport Country Club in Pleasant Valley.
After graduation, Mr. Millick joined his father in working at the Bettendorf Company, maker of railroad cars and their truck frames. As World War II broke out, the Bettendorf Company switched over to International Harvester management and became known as the Bettendorf Tank Arsenal, building a variety of armored vehicles based on the M4 Sherman Tank chassis. After the war finished, Mr. Millick went to work for Westinghouse in Davenport. In 1950, Mr. Millick moved to the then-new ALCOA Davenport Works in Riverdale, Iowa, retiring from there in 1986.
On Thursday, the 19th of July 1956, Mr. Millick married Viola Noll in the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, and they made their home on Brown Street in Bettendorf. An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Millick enjoyed trout fishing in northeastern Iowa, walleye fishing in the Mississippi, golfing – particularly at Credit Island, and vacationing in Wisconsin. In the 1970s, he developed a fervent love for the Atlanta Braves baseball team, one that lasted him the rest of his life.
Mr. Millick was preceded in death by his parents Nicholas and Clara, along with his sister Louise. He is survived by his wife Viola Millick and daughter Linda Plummer, son-in-law William Plummer, all of Bettendorf, along with son Jim Millick of Davenport.
Services are 12:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 6, 2005 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel in Bettendorf, with visitation from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service on Wednesday. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park.
The family asks that memorials be made in his name to the Quad City Animal Welfare Center in Milan, Illinois.
The family would also like to acknowledge the staff and management of Iowa Masonic Health Facilities for their quality of care they gave Hugh these past 2 years. We owe a very, very special thanks to IMHF’s Dawn Czubara, LPN. Without her compassion, kindness, care, advocacy, and love, this would have been far more difficult than it was for Hugh and us.
Online condolences may be expressed to the family by visiting Hugh’s obituary at www.McGinnis-Chambers.com.
