Icy Bernice “Bernie” Guy, 72, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf following a courageous battle with cancer.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, June 4, 2011 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel in Bettendorf. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Catfish Jazz Society or to the family.
She was born April 27, 1939 in Columbus, Mississippi one of thirteen children born to William Monroe & Jessie May (Belk) Shepherd. On December 24, 1970, she was united in marriage to Lawrence M. “Larry” Guy in East Moline, Illinois.
Bernie was a friendly & familiar face at K & K Hardware in Bettendorf where she had been employed for 30 years. In earlier years, she worked at Sieg Auto Parts in Davenport, Iowa.
She was tremendous fan of jazz music and was a tireless volunteer at the annual Bix Biederbeck Jazz Festival for over 30 years. In addition, she was a dedicated and loyal member of the Catfish Jazz Society where she served as Vice-President for 10 years. She was also a long-time member of the “Birthday Club.”
Bernie loved to cook & bake for her family & friends, was a great “organizer” of events & get-togethers, enjoyed collecting ladybugs and was dearly loved by her family & many friends.
Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Larry; her children, Howard Lee Dunn of Silvis, Illinois, Edward Carloun Dunn of Seabeck, Washington, Donna Louise Dunn of Bettendorf, Sheila Mae (Lupe) Padilla of Moline, Illinois, Vickie (Mark) Woodford of Grand Mound, Iowa, Robert (Tami) Guy of Grand Mound, Iowa, Teresa Keith of Eldridge, Iowa and Deanna (Mike) Barnard of Davenport; fifteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; her sister, Irene Pounders of Claedonia, Mississippi; her brother, Clay (Floralee) Shepherd of Steens, Mississippi; and many nieces, nephews, cousins & wonderful friends.
Bernie was preceded in death by ten sisters & brothers.
