Ila Marie (Kastli) Phares, 73, a resident of Wilton, Iowa and formerly of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa, after a brief battle with cancer.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel in Bettendorf. Burial will be at the Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
She was born November 20, 1936 in Oelwein, Iowa, the daughter of Ernest & Dorothy (Warnke) Kastli and was a 1954 graduate of Tripoli High School in Tripoli, Iowa. In 1963 she was united in marriage to Paul C. Phares in Davenport, Iowa. He preceded her in death in 1965. On February 3, 1968, she was united in marriage to Guy (William) E. Phares in Davenport. He preceded her in death on August 14, 1991.
Ila was employed in the school cafeterias of the Bettendorf School System, worked as a Certified Nurse Assistant in Davenport and Bettendorf, did secretarial work and until recently, worked at the U.S. Post Office in Wilton.
She was a member & past-president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9128 of Bettendorf.
Among the things she enjoyed were traveling, spending time on the casino boats, doing crochet, camping, working beyond age 65 and family gatherings.
Those left to honor her memory include her sons, James Phares of Ft. Madison, Iowa and Keith Phares of Chicago & his partner, Shawn Reese; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; her step-daughters, Janet Teters of Frankfort, Illinois and Christine Phares-Ruble of Park View, Iowa; her step-sons, Jim Phares of Blue Grass, Iowa, William Phares of Davenport and John Phares of Moline, Illinois; and her brothers, Jim Kastli of Fairbanks, Iowa, Al Kastli of Waterloo and Tom Kastli of Cedar Falls, Iowa.
In addition to her husbands, Ila was preceded in death by her step-daughter, Sandy; her sister Violet; 2 brothers, George and Don; and her parents.
