Irvin Kendell “Ike” Kaighin, 88, resident of Bettendorf, Iowa, passed away Sunday, October 4, 2015, at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus in Davenport. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 P.M., Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, October 7, at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Memorials may be made to the Irvin Kaighin Scholarship, AugustanaCollege.
Ike was born September 9, 1927, in Yarmouth, Iowa, the son of Karl Kenneth and Nora May Peterson Kaighin. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1944 and attended the University of Iowa, where he wrestled for the Hawkeyes. After serving in the U.S. Navy, during World War II, he attended Iowa Wesleyan College, where he met his future wife, Beverly Ruth Scott. They were married in 1952 and moved to Bettendorf, where he was employed by Alcoa. He graduated from Augustana the same year, with a degree in Business Psychology. Ike retired from Alcoa in 1991 after 40 years of service working in various departments beginning in the medical department to sales and inventory control management in the foil mill.
Ike was a loyal Hawkeye fan, especially enjoying football. He liked traveling and particularly appreciated his Honor Flight in 2014. He loved spending time with friends and family. He was especially proud of his grandchildren and great grandsons. In recent years he was interested in discovering his Manx and Swedish heritage. Much of his time was spent on personal writing and corresponding through letters and emails.
Ike is survived by his daughters Becky (Richard) Roller, LeClaire, IA; Penny (Tom) Grunder, Beloit, WI; grandchildren Krista (Will) Stensrud, Minneapolis, MN; Lisa (Tony) Corsiglia, LeClaire, IA; Kimberly Grunder (David Schlachtenhaufen), Los Angeles, CA; Allison (Brian) Guzzo, Castle Rock, Colorado; Jeff (Elise) Grunder, Beloit, WI; and great grandchildren Kaighin and Loren Stensrud; Ellis and Michael Corsiglia; Adler Guzzo; and Baby Schlachtenhaufen due in November.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Beverly.
