Jack W. Smith, 77, a resident of Davenport, Iowa died Sunday, December 7, 2003 at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, December 11, 2003 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf, Iowa. Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Berean Baptist Church, Davenport.
He was born July 18, 1926 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the son of Ward R. & Bernice I. (Reams) Smith. On July 18, 1958, he was united in marriage to Patricia A. Morris in Davenport, Iowa.
Jack & his family owned & operated the Lighthouse Market, later known as Mr. Homegrown on River Drive in Davenport for many years. After leaving Mr. Homegrown, he worked at the East Locust Hardware Store for many years. Some years later, he moved to Florida and worked for Builder’s Supply in Ft. Meyers, Florida, retiring in 1993 at which time he returned to Iowa.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army with the 17th Infantry in the south Pacific and Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and was awarded two Purple Heart Medals for wounds received in action on Okinawa. In addition, he received the Oak Leaf Cluster, the World War II Victory Medal, the Bronze Battle Star, the Overseas Service Bar and the Good Conduct Medal.
He was a member of the Berean Baptist Church and a former member of the “I” Club. Jack loved sports of all kinds, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Patricia; his daughter & son-in-law, Laurie & David Mohr of Clinton, Iowa; his son, Jim A. Smith of Davenport; his grandchildren, Kristen McLarnan, Aaron McLarnan & Rachel McLarnan; his great-granddaughter, Eden Lueders; his sisters, Karen Smith of Tucson, Arizona and Sue Stolmeier of Orca Island, Washington; his brothers & sisters-in-law, Gene A. & Shirlee Smith of Bakula, Florida, Richard G.& Debbie Smith of San Marcos, California and Terry K. & Joann Smith of Davenport; and his special friends, Jim & Sue Morris.
Jack was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth Brian Smith; his great-granddaughter, Kaya Jane Lueders; his sister, Dorothy Stepnitz; and his parents.
