James A. "Red" Buchanan, 71, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Sunday, March 02, 2008 at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.
His funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, March 6, 2008 at the First Baptist Church of Bettendorf where he was a member. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held at 11:30 A.M. Friday, March 7, 2008 at the Decatur Cemetery in Decatur, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church.
He was born June 6, 1936 in Decatur County, Iowa, the son of Wiley & Madge (Havens) Buchanan. On July 18, 1960, he was united in marriage to Loretta F. Brooks in Des Moines, Iowa.
Red was employed at the J. I. Case Company in Bettendorf for 25 years, retiring as a boiler plant operator in 1991.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict. In addition to the church, he was a member of the Bettendorf Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9128 and the Bettendorf Masonic Lodge #664, A.F. & A.M.
Some of his favorite times were those spent with his friends at the Maid-Rite and other gathering places. Blessed with a great sense of humor, Red enjoyed a good laugh and loved an occasional practical joke played on family and friends.
Those left to honor his memory include his beloved wife, Loretta; his sons, David Buchanan of Bettendorf and Doug (Tammy) Buchanan of Park View, Iowa; his grandchildren, Emily (Ian) Scott, Elizabeth Buchanan, Abby Buchanan, Audrey Buchanan & Dawson Buchanan; his great-grandchild, Ellie Elizabeth Scott; his mother, Madge Buchanan of Liberty, Missouri; and his sister, Lois Stewart of Liberty, Missouri.
His father, Wiley preceded him in death.
The family would like to extend their special thanks to the dialysis nurses and also the staff of the Clarissa Cook Hospice House and of Guardian Care for their compassionate and professional care shown to them during this difficult time.
