James P. Maloney, 86, of Bettendorf, died Sunday, July 31, 2016 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.
Funeral services celebrating his life will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 4, 2016 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. An additional visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. on Friday, August 5, 2016 at the Printy Funeral Home in Warsaw, Illinois. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Warsaw. Memorials may be made to the Riverbend Food Bank in Davenport.
Jim was born on December 22, 1929 in Warsaw, Illinois, the son of Fred J. and Mabel (Martin) Maloney. On March 30, 1957 in Oak Park, Illinois he married Maureen T. Hammervoll.
Jim served his country in the United States Army from 1951 – 1953 during the Korean Conflict. He was a 1951 graduate of the University of Illinois with a degree in economics and attended graduate school at Western Illinois University. He was a lifetime member of the Presbyterian church, serving as Deacon on three occasions. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge #257 in Warsaw and served as an alderman for the city of Warsaw.
Jim retired from the Rock Island Arsenal in 1989 after 26 years of service. Previously, he worked in personnel management with Keokuk Steel Casting in Keokuk, Iowa and worked for the Social Security Administration for three years in the Rock Island office.
Jim enjoyed fishing, rock hunting and spending time at their river cottage on Nauvoo Road. He had a strong interest in economics and history, authoring a book, “The Warsaw Diary”. Jim was a member of National Active and Retired Federal Employees and University of Illinois Alumni. He was an active volunteer, serving as a tax aide, counsellor for retirees and food pantry worker.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Maureen; two sons, Michael J. Maloney of Davenport and Thomas E. Maloney of Moline; grandchildren, Katherine and Edward, and their mother, Maria J. Maloney of East Moline; sister-in-law, Rose Maloney of Alton, Illinois; brother-in-law, George Sarnicki of The Villages, Florida; many nieces and nephews including a special nephew, Ted Thorn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Doris and brother, Don.
