Dr. James E. Porter, 92, a resident of Washington, Iowa and formerly of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Thursday, January 01, 2009 at the Washington County Hospital in Washington.
A graveside service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, January 10, 2009 at Riverside Cemetery in Anamosa, Iowa. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to Camp Courageous of Iowa or to a favorite charity. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home of Bettendorf, Iowa is assisting the family with arrangements.
He was born October 5, 1916 in Martell, Iowa, the son of Harry & Anna (Ellison) Porter. On July 10, 1951, he was united in marriage to Billie Frazer in Clinton, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death on October 31, 1987.
Jim enlisted in the U.S. Navy on November 15, 1935. He served as a Corpsman, Laboratory Technician, Blood Bank Specialist and Medical Photographer in a variety of military installations throughout the world. On May 24, 1955, he was honorably discharged as a Chief Warrant Officer W-2. Jim received an honorary doctor of science degree from Great Lakes College in Detroit, Michigan.
His memberships included the Anamosa Masonic Lodge #46, the Bettendorf Early Morning Lodge #672 where he was past master, Snow Lodge #44 of LeClaire, Iowa where he was past master, the Davenport Consistory, Kaaba Shrine, the H-Twelve Club and the Order of the Eastern Star. In addition, he was a member of the American Legion Post of Bettendorf, the Anamosa VFW Post #4077, the Retired Officer’s Association, U.S. Navy Fleet Reserves Association and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church of Bettendorf.
Those left to honor his memory include his brother, Wayne “Jack” Porter of Fairfield, Iowa, and 14 nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, Jim was preceded in death by his sister Gertrude “Mollie” and his brother, Ralph “Bill” Porter, and sister, Helen English.
