James E. Stewart, 87, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.
His funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, September 18, 2009 at Asbury United Methodist Church of Bettendorf where he was an active and faithful member. Visitation will be from 9:30 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Friday at the church. Private family graveside services will be at Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church or the Clarissa Cook Hospice House. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home of Bettendorf is assisting the family with arrangements.
He was born January 18, 1922 in Boone, Iowa, the son of George & Calista Stewart. On August 14, 1942, he was united in marriage to Thelma Hohimer in St. Louis, Missouri.
Jim graduated from high school in Packwood, Iowa and served for 18 months in the South Pacific with the U.S. Army Combat Engineers. During his military service, he participated in the Invasion of Leyte and the occupation of Okinawa.
Following his honorable discharge, he graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in mechanical engineering.
Jim retired in 1984 after nearly 37 years with the Iowa-Illinois Gas & Electric Company. He was named Assistant Gas Department Manager in 1954 and was promoted to Iowa City District Manager later that same year. In 1966, he was named Executive Analyst and was promoted to Director of the Communications and Control Staff in 1969. Jim was named Director of Purchases and Stores in 1973.
He was a member of the Bettendorf Rotary Club for over 50 years and was a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow.
Jim & Thelma spent many enjoyable and warm winters in Arizona after retirement. During his life, Jim was an avid sports fan of a variety of teams and sports.
Those left to honor his memory include his beloved wife, Thelma; his daughters, Martha (Rob) Bower in Rhode Island and Mary (Mike) Dolan in New Jersey; his grandsons, Matt Bower, Seth Bower and Trevor Dolan, all on the east coast.
His parents, his brothers, Harold Stewart and Frank Stewart who was killed in action during World War II and is buried in France, preceded Jim in death.
