James G. “Sam” Sampson, 82, of Davenport, died Monday, November 24, 2008 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, December 1, 2008 at Grandview Baptist Church, Davenport, where he was a member. Visitation will be from 2:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. Sunday at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Burial will be in Rock Island National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Partners with Youth Campaign of the Davenport Family YMCA.
Jim was born June 17, 1926 in Davenport, the son of Roy & Mae (Bitterman) Sampson. Jim entered the United States Navy during World War II and served as a medic while attached to the United States Marine Corps. He also served his country during the Korean Conflict.
He was united in marriage to Evelyn M. Hill on December 26, 1949 in Davenport.
Jim was employed as a postal carrier for over 30 years. Following his retirement, he was employed at the Davenport Family YMCA for 16 years. Additionally, he was employed with Northwest Bank and Tri-City Florist.
Jim was an avid fan of John Wayne films and he enjoyed playing pool. He was dedicated to the Lord and to his beloved family. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife of 58 years, Evelyn; his daughters, Maria Parks, of Davenport and Missy (Chuck) Bozarth, of Buffalo, Iowa; his grandchildren, Leaha Parks, Quentin Parks, Mariah Parks, Kitty Critten, Trisha Reynolds, Brooke Reynolds, Stephanie Bozarth, Matthew Sampson, John Sampson and Jessica Sampson; his great-grandchildren, Hayley, Kaitlyn, Grant, Chloe and Hannah; his sisters, Nellie Wieckhorst, of Davenport and Florence (Ed) Ingram, of Bettendorf; his daughter-in-law, Cindi Sampson; and several foster children including Kathy and Ruth.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Mark Sampson, and his brothers, Chuck and Leroy.
