James Lynn Reed, 56, a resident of Colona, Illinois and formerly of St. Thomas, Pennsylvania went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 21, 2007 at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus in Rock Island, Illinois.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf, Iowa. A service to celebrate his life will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, November 28, 2007 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 3775 Middle Rd. in Bettendorf where he was a member. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday at the Rock Island National Cemetery. Those wishing to attend the graveside service should meet at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home by 9:30 A.M. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.
He was born November 23, 1950 in Hopewell, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Edith Pearl (Barton) Reed. On March 5, 1999, he was united in marriage to Julie A. Schwake in Bettendorf.
Jim served in the U.S. Army from 1970 until 1973 and was honorably discharged as a Specialist 5th Class. Following his military service, he was employed at the Letterkenny Army Depot in Pennsylvania and spent 5 1/2 years in the Netherlands with the Combat Equipment Group of Europe. After returning to the United States, he worked at the Rock Island Arsenal with the Army Sustainment Command where he was Chief of the Pre-Deployment Training Equipment Team. Jim had a total of over 37 years of proud & faithful federal service.
He was a loving & devoted, husband, dad, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend. For over 12 years, he coached girl's softball with his daughter in St. Thomas, Pennsylvania. His interests and activities were many and varied. He was an avid coin collector, loved to play golf, was especially fond of traveling, enjoyed attending flea markets and treasured the time he could spend with his beloved grandsons.
He had a special place in his heart for animals, caring for and loving countless stray dogs during his life, including two of his favorites, Brownie & Hush Puppy.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Julie; his daughter, Holly Jo (Matthew) Coldsmith of Greencastle, Pennsylvania; his grandsons, Dylan & Ryley Coldsmith of Greencastle; his sisters, Barbara (Tom) Donaldson and Mary Belle (Bruce) Zimmerman, all of Everett, Pennsylvania; his brother, Bob (Ruth) Reed of Saxton, Pennsylvania; his brother-in-law & sister-in-law, Neal & Annie Schwake of LeClaire, Iowa; his father-in-law, Fred Schwake of LeClaire; his niece, Elizabeth Schwake; his nephews, Ron Donaldson, Steve Donaldson and Christopher Schwake; and his beloved canine companions, Toni, Roxanne & Sophia.
In addition to his mother, his sister, Carole Kushtoff; his brothers, LeJay Reed and Bill Reed; and his grandfather and mentor, Elmer Barton, preceded him in death.
The family would like to extend their special thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of the ICU at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus for their professional and loving care.
