James W. Smith, 57, of Bettendorf, Iowa, died Saturday, July 12, 2008 at his home after a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family.
Jim was born July 18, 1950 in Davenport, the son of Dallas & Violet (Hoffstetter) Smith. He was a graduate of Bettendorf High School. During the Vietnam Conflict, he served in the United States Army. Jim had been employed at General Electric in Bettendorf for 15 years prior to his retirement. He restored a 1935 Ford Sedan to perfect condition and had won first place one year at the Davenport Classic Car Show. He also enjoyed restoring antique telephones.
Jim also enjoyed bass fishing, music of all kinds and spending time with his nieces and nephews.
Those left to honor his memory include his mother, Violet Smith, of Bettendorf; his sister, Julia (Les) Martzahn, of Long Grove, Iowa; his brothers, Allen Smith, of Bettendorf, and Robert Smith, of Davenport; his niece, Laura (Ken) Heimendinger, of Bettendorf; his nephew, Matthew Petersen, of Long Grove; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
His father, Dallas, preceded him in death on February 18, 2000.
