Jeffrey Schafer

June 12, 1954 — December 22, 2017

Jeffrey P. Schafer, 63, of Eldridge, passed away Friday, December 22, 2017 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 28, 2017 at Faith Lutheran Church in Eldridge.  Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the church.  Private burial will be at Davenport Memorial Park.  Memorials may be made to the family to further his son, Chad’s education.

Jeff was born June 12, 1954, in Davenport, the son of Cleyon & Susan (Nehlson) Schafer.  A graduate of Davenport Central, he received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa and his Master’s degree from Kearney State University in Nebraska.

Jeff was united in marriage to Marilee J. Bowers on July 16, 1977 in Grinnell, Iowa.

He taught 4th grade, most recently at Truman Elementary and before at Fillmore Elementary in Davenport, retiring in 2012.  Before that, he had implemented the Talented & Gifted Program at North Scott Elementary Schools and began his teaching career in Cambridge, Nebraska.

Jeff enjoyed traveling and embarking on vacation cruises.  He and Marilee were avid supporters of art, music and theater.  He kept up to date with current events and enjoyed history.  He also enjoyed basketball and the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Marilee; his sons, Michael Schafer of Wooster, Ohio, Shawn Schafer of Eldridge and Chad Schafer of Eldridge; his brothers, David (Wynne) Schafer of Davenport, John Schafer and his wife, Sue Ellingson of Madison, Wisconsin and Dan (Margaret) Schafer of Houston, Texas.

Jeff was preceded in death by his parents.
