Jerald “Jerry” Dean Roskens, 81, of Bettendorf, Iowa, passed away on March 9, 2018, in Iowa City, Iowa.
Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, March 12, 2018, at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at Asbury United Methodist Church in Bettendorf with Pastor Kerrin Kirkpatrick officiating. Burial will follow at Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery.
Jerry was born in Clay County to Eite and Rosetta Roskens on August 18, 1936. He graduated from Okoboji High School in 1954. Jerry married his wife, Vierlyn, on June 5, 1959, in Primghar, Iowa. He graduated from Northwestern College, Buena Vista College and Northeastern Missouri State Teacher’s College. He worked as a math teacher for Lake Mills and Bettendorf schools for 39 years.
In retirement, Jerry was a lawn-care specialist. He was an active member of the Asbury United Methodist Church since 1963. Jerry also was active in several volunteer efforts, including organizing the Asbury’s Salvation Army Holiday Bell Ringer volunteers for more than 30 years at K&K Hardware store. He also served in Bettendorf’s Food Pantry.
Jerry is preceded in death by his father and mother, Eite and Rosetta Roskens, and his brother, James Roskens.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Vierlyn, his children, Val and Stephen Tews of Oskaloosa, Iowa; Larry and Lisa Roskens of Groom, Texas; and Ted and Mary Roskens of South Lyon, Michigan; his sister, Jean and Les Kiel of Lake Havasu City, Arizona; 9 grandchildren, Kaitlin and Anthony Rohlik, Joshua Lubben, Michaela and Christopher Maddox, Jes Roskens, Bekah and Zane Kuehn, Nate Roskens, Alan Bush, David Roskens, and Dani Roskens; and 3 great-grandchildren, Shayden Maddox, Zaviar Rohlik, and Royston Rohlik.
Pallbearers will be Jerry’s grandsons: Alan Bush, Zane Kuehn, Josh Lubben, Christopher Maddox, Anthony Rohlik, David Roskens, Jes Roskens, and Nate Roskens. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Asbury Men’s Club.
Memorials may be given to the Bettendorf Food Pantry.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
