John A. Allen, 95, a resident of Palmer Hills Retirement Residence of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at the Iowa Masonic Health Facility in Bettendorf.

A service to honor his life will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, November 18, 2013 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Bettendorf where he was a long-time and loyal member.  He will be laid to rest at Holy Family Cemetery in Davenport where military honors will be accorded.  Visitation will be from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. on Sunday at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home of Bettendorf and from 9:30 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. Monday at the church.  Memorials may be made to the Scott County Special Olympics, the Eastern Iowa Poultry Association, or St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.

He was born in Moline, Illinois on September 20, 1918, the son of Carl & Gladys Mae (Bingman) Allen.  On October 12, 1948, John was united in marriage to Marian Elizabeth Werthmann in Davenport, Iowa.  She preceded him in death on March 18, 1988.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged as a Private First Class in 1947.

John was employed as an accountant for the Alcoa Company, retiring in 1980 after 32 years of faithful service.  He, his wife, and his family also operated a small farm in rural Bettendorf for many years, raising chickens, hogs, other animals, and a large garden.

In addition to the church, John was a member and former officer of the Eastern Iowa Poultry Association, a member of the Alcoa Retirees and the Scott County Farm Bureau.  In his spare time, he enjoyed playing cards with his family and friends, raising and caring for his chickens, gardening, cooking, and singing.

Those left to honor his memory include his children, Sandy (Rich) Gerber of Aurora, Colorado, Teresa Allen of Bettendorf, John (Laurie) Allen of Dubuque, Iowa, Bob (Diana) Allen of Iowa City, Iowa, Jane (Bill) Weber of Kinross, Iowa, David (Connie) Allen of Riverdale, Iowa, Marty (Becky) Allen of Bettendorf and Steve (Beth) Allen of Northglenn, Colorado; sixteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Bobby Allen, his parents, and his step-father Edward Ford.
