John W. “Jack” Fahl, 88, a longtime resident of Davenport, Iowa area, passed away on Sunday, December 15, 2024, at Angel’s Grace Hospice in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin.
Jack was born in Lafayette, Indiana on January 30, 1936, the son of Joseph and E. Marie (Knowles) Fahl. He moved to Davenport, Iowa at age 8, and he was a 1954 graduate of “The” Davenport High School. In 1955, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and after four years of active duty at various military bases, he received his honorable discharge as a Veteran of the Korean War.
On June 5, 1960, he was united in marriage to Theona J. Fischer at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Davenport.
Following his service in the Navy, Jack continued his education at Iowa State University where he earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1962. He earned his master’s degree in electrical engineering at The Ohio State University in 1969. He also attended Purdue University, Augustana College, St. Ambrose University, and the University of Iowa.
Prior to his retirement, Jack worked at the Rock Island Arsenal as an Electronic Engineer, as Acting Chief of Small Caliber Weapons and was an integral member of the Engineering Support Directorate.
Jack was an active member of Asbury United Methodist Church, the American Legion, and had served as a board member of Pine Hill Cemetery.
While a student at Davenport High School, Jack was active in football, basketball, wrestling, and baseball. During his military service, he participated in fast-pitch softball, and after retirement from the Arsenal, he continued to be active in slow-pitch softball for another 17 years.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughter, Dr. Julie (Mike) McCray of St. Louis, Missouri; his son, Dr. Joe (Kay) Fahl of Waukesha, Wisconsin; his grandchildren, Marcus, Rose, Ellie (Geoff), Doug, Emily, and Jessica; and great-grandchild Savannah as well as his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, and their families.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Theona, her parents, and his brother Richard (Dody) Fahl.
His funeral service will be held at noon on January 3rd, 2025, at Asbury United Methodist Church in Bettendorf. The visitation will be held from 10 AM to noon. A luncheon will be held at the church after the service, and the burial will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery in Davenport. Memorials may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church (Trustees Fund and Parish Nurse Program.)
