John Wesley “Jack” Jones, 79, of Davenport and Olin, IA, died Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at his home in Davenport.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at the family farm on Newport Road, just north of Olin, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the family, in care of McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, 644 River Dr. Bettendorf, Iowa 52722 who is assisting the family with arrangements.  The family will later distribute the memorials to Jack’s favorite charities.

Born on January 2, 1933 in Chicago, IL, Jack was the son of Morris Rene and Ione (Sweet) Jones.   The family moved to Olin in 1945 and he graduated from Olin High School in 1951.  He then served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.  On October 5, 1962, he married Caroline Hartwig at St. John Lutheran Church in Olin, IA.

He graduated from the University of Iowa with his Bachelor and Master degrees in education.   Jack was a high school math and computer science teacher and he told the best stories. His first year of teaching was for Springville Community School District in Springville, IA. He then taught at Iowa City Regina High School until 1969 where in addition to teaching, he was an assistant football coach. From 1969 to 1995, Jack taught at Davenport West High School.  He also taught at Black Hawk Community College.

Jack had many interests but really enjoyed fishing, hunting, and trapping.   He was an avid sports fan and faithfully watched the Chicago Cubs, White Sox, and Bears games.  During retirement, he developed a love for daylilies.  He was a member of the Cedar Valley Iris and Daylily Society.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Caroline; son, Douglas Jones of Mitchellville and daughter, Ellen Jones of Olin; sister, Gwenn (Ron) Vrooman of Sun City, AZ; one nephew, one niece, and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepmother.
