John Richard Smith, 65, a resident of rural Donahue, Iowa died on Friday, June 21, 2024 at his home.

A memorial visitation will be held from 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, July 11, 2024 at Chambers Funeral Home in Eldridge. Contributions in his memory may be made to any local food bank.

He was born on October 25, 1958 in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Richard and Marilyn (Achey) Smith and was a graduate of Iowa City High School.

On December 17, 1983, he was united in marriage to Debra K. Hinkle at Park View Lutheran Church in Park View, Iowa. She preceded him in death on October 22, 2018.

John was employed as a maintenance mechanic at Bell Publications in Coralville and at Bawden Brothers, later R.R. Donnelly, in Eldridge before his retirement several years ago.

Those left to honor his memory include his mother, Marilyn Smith of Coralville, Iowa; his step-sons, and Daniel (Karla) Marti of East Dubuque, Illinois and Robert Marti in North Carolina; his grandchildren, Derik (Alexis), Kyle, Drake (Katlynn) and Jada (Michael) Chango, Lilly, Gabriel; three great-grandchildren; his sisters, Connie Smith of Iowa City, Barbara (Allan) Haynes of Tipton, Iowa and Susan Smith of Sigourney, Iowa; and his brother, David (Pamela) Smith of Cedar Bluff, Iowa.

In addition to his wife, John was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia (Laverne) Stahmer; his niece, Michelle Smith; and his father, Richard Smith.
