John H. VenHorst, 101, of Bettendorf, died Monday, January 2, 2012 at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, January 6, 2012 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Visitation will be held from 3:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Our Savior Presbyterian Church in Argo, Iowa, where he was a member.

John was born August 31, 1910 in Davenport, the son of John R. & Helena (Venes) VenHorst.

He was united in marriage to Florence Hess on July 14, 1937 in LeClaire. She preceded him in death on February 14, 1966. He was later united in marriage to Marjorie A. Hamann Mess on August 19, 1967 in Bettendorf.

John owned and operated the VenHorst Pump Service for many years in addition to farming in Pleasant Valley. He was a charter member of Our Savior Presbyterian Church and was very instrumental in its founding. In earlier years, he had served with the Pleasant Valley Volunteer Fire Department.

John will be remembered for his sense of humor and his quick wit. He loved to entertain his family and friends with his accordion and greatly enjoyed their company.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Marjorie; his daughters, Helen Peters of Eldridge and Dorothy (Bill) Kennedy of Davenport; his step-daughters, Joanne (Lester) Oberbreckling of Eldridge and Jane (Gary) Weber of Bettendorf; his step-son, Elmer (Maria) Mess of Davenport; eight grandchildren; eleven step-grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; twenty-two step-great-grandchildren; his sister, Sister Marie VenHorst of Davenport; and his brothers, Harry (Mildred) VenHorst of Bettendorf and Herman (Sally) VenHorst of Bettendorf.

In addition to his first wife, Florence, John was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Sister St. John (Emma) VenHorst; his brothers, Walter, Ralph & James; his son-in-law, John Peters; and his step-daughter, Jeanne Krambeck.
