John E. Kable, 75, a longtime resident of Coal Valley, Illinois, passed away on Sunday, December 7, 2008 at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus in Rock Island, Illinois.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf, Iowa. Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family.
John was born June 15, 1932 in Wiconisco, Pennsylvania the son of Clarence and Edna Deitrich. His father died when John was 3. Edna later married William Kable in 1941. The family then moved to Illinois. John married Michele Leiby on May 1, 1970 in Coal Valley.
John went to work for the Quad-City Times in 1948 at a printer. He served in the United States Army from 1950 to 1953 as a part of the 223rd Battalion, 44th Infantry Division. Following his stint in the army John returned to work at the Quad-City Times, retiring in 1995 after 44 years.
John loved to fish and in his earlier years he also loved hunting. He liked to do woodworking and preferred to be outdoors, whether fishing, or just working in the yard. He was also a model train enthusiast and a stamp collector.
He and his wife liked to go on trips to explore the great outdoors. His most memorable trip was to Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks in 1995, but mostly he just liked to spend time around his home. John was also a fan of NASCAR racing, Sprint car racing and the Chicago Bears.
He is survived by his wife, Michele, his sister Patricia (Kable) Schild of Coal Valley, nephews, Scott of Milan, Michigan, Beau of Dayton, Ohio and great-nephew, Alan of East Moline, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence, his step-father, William; and his mother, Edna. He was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Robert Schild.
