John E. Strong Sr., 89, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died Friday, April 8, 2005 at the Bettendorf Healthcare Center.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at the First Assembly of God Church, Bettendorf where he was a faithful member. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. Monday at the church. Memorials may be made to the church. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf is assisting the family with arrangements.
He was born July 15, 1915 in Bluff City, Kansas, the son of Abner Leroy & Ina Arinda (Livingston) Strong. On December 26, 1942, he was united in marriage to Nettie A. Sheridan in Muskogee, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death on July 3, 1995.
John was employed as a crane operator at the Alcoa Company, retiring in 1979 after 30 years of service. In earlier years, he had worked on the railroad from 1946 to 1949.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the south Pacific and was honorably discharged in 1945
In his leisure time, John enjoyed gardening, going fishing, taking picture and going out to eat with his family & friends.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughter, Marlene Carlsen of Sierra Vista, Arizona; his son & daughter-in-law, John E. & Goldie Strong Jr. of Bettendorf; his grandchildren, Kurt, Cindy, Wendy, Kristen, Terri, Andrew & Daniel; twelve great-grandchildren; and his sister-in-law, Lenora Strong of Caldwell, Kansas.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Leola Strong and Mary Kiger; and by his brother, Elvin Strong.
