John F. McDonnell, 81, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Wednesday, March 7, 2007 at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.
His funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, March 12, 2007 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Bettendorf. Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the Bettendorf Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9128. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Sunday at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf where a prayer service will be conducted at 4:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Clarissa Cook Hospice House or St. John Vianney Catholic Church.
He was born December 16, 1925 in Vail, Iowa, the son of Patrick Joseph & Katherine (Freml) McDonnell and was a graduate of Denison (IA) High School. On August 13, 1949, he was united in marriage to Mary Lou Albright at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Davenport, Iowa.
John was employed at the J. I. Case Company in Bettendorf, retiring as an experimental assembler in 1987 after 39 years of faithful service.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army with the 303rd Infantry Regiment in Rhineland. Upon his honorable discharge in 1946, he was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon the World War II Victory Medal, the Europe-African-Middle-Eastern Theater Ribbon with one star and the Good Conduct Medal.
John was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church, the United Auto Worker Union Local 858, the Bettendorf Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9128 and a former member of the Knights of Columbus.
In his leisure time, he enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening, playing golf with his friends and bowling.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Mary; his daughter, Monica VanTheemsche of LeClaire, Iowa; his sons, Robert (Toni) McDonnell of Austin, Texas, Edward McDonnell of Bettendorf, Brian (Donna) McDonnell of Bettendorf and Kevin McDonnell of Muscatine, Iowa; his grandchildren, Melissa McDonnell, Michael McDonnell, Ryan McDonnell, Tiffanie Weaver, Heather McDonnell, Elizabeth VanTheemsche and Scott VanTheemsche; his great-grandchildren, Crystal Weaver, Anakin Weaver and Jade VanTheemsche; and his sister, Patricia Scheidegger of Haverhill, Massachusetts.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Catherine, Margaret, Marita, Rosemary, Josephine, Elizabeth and Loretta; and his brother, Raymond.
