John G. Henkel II, 52, a resident of Rock Island, Illinois, died Sunday, April 2, 2006 at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus in Rock Island.
A memorial visitation to celebrate his life will be held from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.on Thursday, April 6, 2006 at Zion Lutheran Church, 1216 W. 8th St. in Davenport. Memorials may be made to the family. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf is assisting the family with arrangements.
John was born July 23, 1953 in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of John Glenn & Mary (Schaaf) Henkel. He was united in marriage to Taina L. Machalek on February 14, 1989 in Bettendorf, Iowa.
During the Viet Nam Conflict, he served in the U.S. Navy.
John was self-employed throughout the years. He sold batteries and was known as the “Battery Man”. He then did snowplowing and hauling, and drove trucks in the Quad-City area.
He was University of Illinois Extension trained Master Gardener. For many years, he was a loyal volunteer as 4-H Master Gardener in their urban garden program where he was affectionately known as “Oatmeal”. John was also a member of Teamsters Local 371 in Rock Island.
Those left to honor his memory include, his beloved wife, Taina Machalek; his son, Michael Melchi & his wife, Tamara of Rock Island; his daughter, Gabrielle Machalek of Davenport; his sisters, Mary Watson of Muscatine, Iowa, Maria Wetteland of DeWitt, Iowa and Nan Henkel of Davenport; his brothers, Bob Henkel in Florida, Mike Henkel, Lance Henkel, Kurt Henkel, Rick Henkel and Joe Henkel, all of Davenport; his father & step-mother, John & Beverly Henkel of Davenport; and many nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary; and by his sister, Diana Henkel.
