John H. Luppen, 84, a resident of Davenport, Iowa, died suddenly on Friday, August 24, 2007 at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, Davenport.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, August 28, 2007 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf. Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., Monday evening and one hour before the services on Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Pleasant Valley, Iowa. Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church or the Friendly House.
John was born April 12, 1923 on a farm near Durant, Iowa, the son of John & Kathryn (Witt) Luppen. He graduated from Davenport High School, attended St. Ambrose University and obtained his degree in electronic engineering from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. During World War II, he was a pilot for the Army Air Corps and was honorably discharged.
John had been employed as a second officer for United Airlines and he had later worked for Boeing Aircraft. He then traveled extensively around the world while employed for General Motors, based out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
He was an active and life-long member of Zion Lutheran Church in Davenport, was a member of the Tri-Cities Cinema Club, and he was a board member and treasurer for the Men-Gals Dance Club. He also was active with Meals-on-Wheels and participated in activities at the Friendly House. He had also enjoyed ballroom dancing, socializing with his friends and he spent much time studying and researching the teachings of the bible.
Those left to honor his memory include his sister, Helen Funkhouser, of Bettendorf; his nieces, Deb Johnston of Long Grove, Iowa, and Sue Albrecht, of Florida; four grand-nephews; one great-grand nephew; one great- grand niece; his uncle Carl Witt, of Durant, Iowa; and seven cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family would like to express special thanks to the nurses and physicians of the Intensive Care Unit at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, for all their care and comfort during this time.
