John V. Spencer, 82, of Bettendorf, died Tuesday, December 28, 2004 at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, January 1, 2005 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Albia, Iowa. Inurnment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Melrose, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the family.
John was born January 28, 1922 in Moravia, Iowa, the son of Paul & Lelah (Pence) Spencer. He graduated from high school in Aberdeen, South Dakota. He was united in marriage to Eileen Coady on June 17, 1946 in Melrose, Iowa. John owned and operated a barber shop in Moravia from 1951 to 1978. He was also contracted as a postal carrier for 17 years in and around the Quad-Cities.
John had served as mayor of Moravia at one time. He had also been a city councilman and a volunteer firefighter for a number of years.
John had also been a member of the Knights of Columbus in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Eileen; his sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis & Jean Spencer, Iowa City, Iowa and Bob and Kris Spencer, Bettendorf; his grandchildren, Maggie & Alex Spencer, Iowa City and Lisa & Coady Spencer of Bettendorf; one great-grandchild, Abby VanDeVenter, Bettendorf; his brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Donna Spencer, Moravia; his sisters-in-law, Darlene Spencer, Burlington, Iowa and Frances Spencer, Cheyenne; and eleven nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brothers, Edwin and Jack.
