Joseph Luther Belcher Jr., 41, of Bettendorf, Iowa and formerly of Round Lake Beach, Illinois, died March 7, 2011, in his home surrounded by his children and family. He lost his year and a half battle with a rare cancer.
A celebration of Joe’s life will be held at a later date at Bettendorf Christian Church. Contributions in his memory may be made to the family.
Joseph Luther Belcher Jr. was born March 2, 1970 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Joseph Luther Sr. and Agatha Lynn Belcher.
Joe graduated from Round Lake High School in 1988. He attended College of Lake County in Grayslake, Illinois and William Rainey Harper College in Palatine, Illinois where he received an Associates Arts degree in 1990. He then went on to attend Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1993.
Joe was a Rafter Rat, he wrestled, ran track and was an All-Star Football Player for Round Lake High. He was recently inducted in the Round Lake High Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011. Joe wrestled for College of Lake County where he placed 8 th in the nation for wrestling and was inducted in the College of Lake County Athletic Hall of Fame.
Joe played football for William Rainey Harper College. Joe then went on to play AA football for Western Illinois University where he played defensive tackle. He won numerous awards throughout his life for his many achievements.
Joe was a teacher at Magee Middle School in Round Lake and was a beloved coach at Magee Middle School and Round Lake High School in the mid 90’s. He worked for Americas in Davenport, Hy-Vee in Bettendorf and most recently Tri-City in Davenport.
Joe coached his children in sports as well: soccer, baseball, football, and basketball. Joe enjoyed spending time with his four children. Samantha, Nathaniel, Tabitha, and Abigail were his life. He loved coaching them in sports, taking them to the park, fishing, singing, practicing sports with them and going to school activities. He enjoyed hanging out with his children, dancing with Abigail, taking Tabitha and Abigail to Build-A-Bear and playing disc golf with his children.
Those left to honor his memory include his loving children; daughter, Samantha Belcher; son, Nathaniel Belcher; daughter, Tabitha Belcher; and daughter, Abigail Belcher all of Bettendorf; mother, Agatha Belcher of Caneyville, Kentucky; sister, Marie Suchowski of Round Lake Beach; brother, Orville Luther Belcher, III of Bettendorf; and sister Sheila Belcher of Leitchfield, Kentucky; seven nephews; one niece; and a great-niece.
Joseph was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Luther Belcher Sr.; his maternal grandmother, Marie Von Spears; and his paternal grandparents Orville Luther Sr. and Alma Gay Belcher.
