Joseph P. Halpin, 89, of Bettendorf, died Friday, November 25, 2011 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Bettendorf. Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf and one hour prior to the services on Wednesday at the church. Cremation rites will follow. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Joe was born July 13, 1922 in Metuchen, New Jersey the son of Thomas and Margaret (Adams) Halpin. He was united in marriage to Mary Kachuba on November 22, 1947 in Metuchen. She preceded him in death on April 22, 2008.
He had briefly attended Rutgers University in New Jersey. During World War II, he served in the United States Army where he was a recipient of the Purple Heart and was honorably discharged.
Joe was retired from the Rock Island Arsenal where he had been employed as a Budget Analyst. In his earlier years, he had enjoyed playing golf and bowling.
Those left to honor his memory include his daughter, Linda (Bill) Oertel of Durant, Iowa; his sons, Daniel Halpin of Bettendorf and Joseph (Dora) Halpin of West Babylon, New York; his grandchildren, Sandra Bartosch of Davenport and Kristen (Erik) Lutjen of Charlotte, North Carolina; his great-grandchildren, Josh Morgan of Orlando, Florida, Devon Mohr of Davenport and Angela Bartosch of Davenport; and one great-great grandson, Clayton Mahlstedt.
In addition to his wife, Mary, he was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Margaret; his sisters Margaret Kaiser and Ann Marquart; and his brothers, Thomas, George and James .
