Born on November 4, 1927 in Germany, Karl was the son of Albert and Elizabeth (Hiller) Mauler.

Karl graduated from art school in Bod Dur Heim, Germany. He moved to Chicago in 1955 and worked for Vogue-Wright Studios as a Commercial Artist and retoucher of prints. Karl met Shirley Hilfiker, who worked in the office and worked as a model. They were married in 1960 in Monroe, Wisconsin. Karl always dreamed of a shorter commute to work and in 1975 moved his family to Bettendorf. He worked for Wilson Lund Studios in Moline for many years. Then in Bettendorf, along with two other partners, he opened Studio 5 in the Bettendorf Bank Building where he stayed until his retirement.

Karl loved hunting, fishing and camping. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus in Bettendorf and a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. His greatest joy was taking his dog, Molly for a walk three times a day.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife of 54 years, Shirley; children, Michael (Stef) Mauler of West Lake, Texas and Brenda (Dr. Michael) Saulter of Bangor, Maine; five grandchildren, Eric and Scott Mauler, Kaitlin, Brianna and Michaela Saulter; sister Edeltraut (Klaus) Willner in Germany; brother, Wolfgang (Inga) Mauler of Munich, Germany; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother who was killed during World War II and his pet companion, Molly.
