Kay was born April 8, 1924 in Middletown, New York, the daughter of Andrew & Agnes (Kertscher) Johnson.
Kay was a city girl and was raised in New York. In high school, she enjoyed singing and performed at Carnegie Hall with the All-City Choir. As a young woman, she took the subway into Manhattan every day, working in the Empire State Building as a secretary. She used to tell stories of taking pillows and blankets to sleep in Central Park on hot nights.
During World War II, Kay’s sister Nan was dating a young Army man who introduced Kay to his buddy, Ray Campbell. Ray was a Corporal in the United States Army in World War II, and after a whirlwind courtship, they were married in Brooklyn, New York on September 7, 1943.
After the war, Kay and Ray moved to Iowa to live on his family farm. This was a shock, to say the least for Kay, as she was used to lipstick, gloves and nail polish every day. Over the years she was a homemaker and raised seven children. After learning to drive as the age of 40, she resumed her career as an executive secretary, working at General Life, US Steel and Bryant Bureau in the Quad-Cities. Kay loved crossword puzzles, sewing, music and even the occasional martini.
Those left to honor her memory include her daughters, Mary Briccetti and her husband, Al, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Joanne Endorf and her husband, Bob, of Blue Grass, Iowa, Teresa Campbell of Littleton, Colorado, Linda O’Connell and her husband, Terry, of Davenport, Iowa, and Chris Duncan and her husband, Randy, of Davenport; her sons, Mike Campbell and his wife, Cathy, of Dayton, Ohio, and Patrick Campbell of St. Paul, Minnesota; twelve grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and her sister and brother-in-law, Nan and Chet Scherer, of Vero Beach, Florida.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ray on January 29, 1985, and her brother, Andrew Johnson.
