Kenneth D. Oestreich, 61, of Bettendorf, died Saturday, June 5, 2010 at home after a brief illness.
A memorial gathering to celebrate his life will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 10, 2010 at Biaggi’s Ristorante, 5195 Utica Ridge Road in Davenport. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Honor Flight Network or to the Civil War Preservation Trust.
Ken was born April 24, 1949 in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Dwight & Ruby (Ward) Oestreich. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia and his Master’s Degree in Land Use from the University of Tennessee. Ken began his work in City Planning and Zoning in St. Louis.
On December 31, 1994, Ken was united in marriage to Dorothy 'Dee' Piper (Little) at their home in Davenport.
Ken worked tirelessly for the Planning & Zoning Department and the Historic Preservation Commission of the City of Davenport for 20 years. His contributions combined with his past experience and knowledge will be long remembered.
Ken's dedication to the future development and restoration of Davenport and also to further educate and assist the land use staff, city council members, plan and zoning and various other committees he sat on, Ken began publishing ( The City Plan and Zoning newsletter) in his early career with the city that featured articles on P&Z. He applied his artistic skills and sense of humor in each issue.
The first born son of WWII veterans, Ken was a life-long military enthusiast, especially the Civil War era. He was an avid reader and enjoyed bird watching, flower gardening and nature in general. He was also a fan of University of Missouri 'Mizzou' Basketball and the St. Louis Cardinals Baseball teams.
Those left to honor his memory include his beloved wife, Dee Piper; her children, Tara (Michael) Hanson, of Lake St. Louis, Missouri, Brian (Lynn) Bridgman of Portland, Oregon, and James (Mick) Piper, Jr. of McKinney, Texas; nine step-grandchildren; his sisters, Barbara (Dick) Ginard of Centerville, Ohio and Peggy Kurlandski of St. Louis; his brothers, Michael (Robin) Oestreich and Chris (Mary) Oestreich, all of St. Louis; his nieces, Bella and Melanie and Valerie, and his nephews, Andrew & Noah.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents.
