Kent Bowers

Kent L. “Popo” Bowers, 86, a resident of Davenport, Iowa died on Friday, October 28, 2022 at his home after an extended illness.

A celebration of life gathering will be hosted by the family at Grumpy's Saloon, 2120 E. 11th St. in Davenport on Sunday, November 6th from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family to be distributed to some of Kent’s favorite causes.  McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home of Bettendorf is assisting the family with arrangements.

He was born in Davenport on August 29, 1936, the son of Cecil O. “Bud” and Wilhemina L. (Schlapkohl) Bowers.  On June 29, 1956, he was united in marriage to Geraldine Hurt in Bettendorf.  Kent served in the U.S. Navy Reserve for 8 years and was honorably discharged as an Ensign 2nd Class in 1963.

Kent was a retired carpenter and was an accomplished wood carver.  He made countless duck calls, turkey calls and hollow body duck decoys as well. He was a charter member of the Callmakers and Collectors Association of America, the Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Society and the Catfish Jazz Society.

His roots were in the Village of East Davenport where he served on the Historical Association. Kent chaired the annual Civil War Re-Enactment in the village for many years and supported many community activities all of his life.

He was instrumental in the founding of Rudy’s Tacos in the village and was a friend to many.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Gerri; his daughters, Stephanie (Dave) Davis of Rock Island, Illinois, Melissa (Jim Moreno) Boone of Bettendorf and Stacey (Scott) Zindel of Davenport; his grandchildren, Sara (Mike) Toliver of Bettendorf, Kent (Christina) Boone of Davenport and Stephanie (K.C.) Knutson in Wisconsin; his great-grandchildren, Henry Toliver, Gauge “Monte” Boone, Daniella Boone and Libby Knutson; special nieces, Theresa Murray, DeBor Bowers, Mindy Bowers and Teresa (Greg) Hutchison; a close and dear friend, Mike Salter of Bettendorf; and many other beloved friends.

Kent was preceded in death by his brother, Don Bowers; and his parents.
