Larry B. James, 80, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa died on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Davenport. The burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Friday, October 20, 2023, at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church.
Larry was born on May 8, 1943, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, the son of Edward and Evora (Johnson) James. He lived in many places (his father was in the Air Force) including Shreveport, Louisiana, Georgia, Texas, Germany, and England. He graduated from Northern Burlington County Regional High School in New Jersey.
He married Elise L. Doerr on August 12, 1967, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Davenport.
Larry was a member of Holy Cross since 1969, serving as an usher and transportation provider. He was employed by AAA Motor Club of Iowa for 26 years and then at the Quad City Dental Lab from 1993 until his retirement in 2018.
He was a great Cardinal baseball fan and an avid fan of the Arkansas Razorbacks and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Larry loved to ride trains to various places on the east and west coasts, north to Montreal and south to New Orleans.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, of 56 years, Elise; his son Christopher James of Davenport, his daughter, Julie James of Bettendorf, and his son Kevin (Liz) James of Davenport; his grandchildren, Wyatt, Hadley and Myles James; his sister, Debbie Thomas of Van Buren, Arkansas, his aunt, Hiltraud James of Van Buren, Arkansas; his in-laws, Richard and Nancy Doerr of St. Charles, Illinois, Barbara and Al Gregersen of Waterloo, Iowa; nine nieces and nephews and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Barbara James Trafican; and his uncle, Lee James of Van Buren, Arkansas.
