Larry E. Newton, 62, a resident of Davenport, Iowa died unexpectedly on Thursday, August 12, 2004 in the emergency room at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus in Davenport.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Monday, August 16, 2004 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Chapel, Bettendorf. Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family.
He was born September 3, 1941 in Burlington, Iowa the son of Harold & Anna (McEvoy) Newton. He served in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged on September 13, 1962. On May 6, 1961, he married Betty J. Becker in Davenport.
Larry was a 24-year employee of Sears Manufacturing in Davenport and was a member of the United Auto Workers Union, Local 1896 of Davenport.
Larry built, owned & raced a 1984 S-10 Pick-Up at the Cordova Dragway and was a avid fan of drag racing for many years. He was a man that could fix virtually anything for anybody and was always glad to lend a hand when help was needed. He was also a member & president of the West End Men’s Pool League.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Betty; his daughters, Debbie Engel of Davenport & her companion, Curt Havenhill, Tracy Dorgan of Davenport and her husband, Steve and Brenda Newton of Davenport and her close friend, Mike Manis; and his grandsons, Arron Lorenz and Cody Dorgan.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents.
